Making Connections

After reading chapter 5, I was able to make a better connection with Dr. Burmakcs suggestions. She explains the importance of thinking out side of the box and not being by the book on your lessons. Implementing other strategies is welcomes, especially technology. She goes into further detail of making connectins from abstract to concrete. It reminds me of schema, how our brain collects, stores and recalls informations for later use. Many students and people make different connections according to what is stored in our "files". It is always good to build on prior knowledge. Furthermore, including humor and sequencing events into to have fun with the audience. I enjoyed and look forward to implementing 10:2 in my educational setting. Since viewing Dr.Medina's tutorial video, it had me thinking of what activity can our classroom do every ten minutes. Also, comparing and contrasting activities as mentioned in the chapter assist with grabing the audiences attention. I personally enjoy pictues that have some attributes altered and the reader must locate them.

Ringing CHIMES

Chapter 4 makes the connection to many educators and the need to race against time to meet all the standards. I am exhausted after the day, trying to speak, teach and check for understanding all within thirty minute increments. Dr. Burmak understands and explains the expectations imposed on teachers. Unfortunetly, we live in a sink or swim mindframe. In this chapter it discusses how to be effective in a presentation and most importantly to gain the audiences attention and the retention of the material. Dr. Burmak makes it a point to use herself as an example for the reader to make the connection.

Celebrating presenters

As educators, we are presenters and entertainers, but for how long can we entertain our students. Chapter 3 gives us insights of the different ways to becoming a better presenter. Dr. Burmak discusses the lecture,the enterainer, the motivational speaker and the educator. She was able to make the connection from the movie Pay it Forward and TIF. She mentions the importance of knowing your audience and the allowing them to process the information before they can contribute insight and collaborate the information they have been given.

they Snooze....you lose

Chapeter One did wonders for my boring ppt. Dr. Burmark explains how to create an inviting and unique presentation. In technolgy, what was new last weeks is already considered outdated. I can remember how our instructors supported and even motivated us to use all the defaul templates,animations and designs. It made for a cute,coloful presentation,but that was then. Today, to many of use make the mistake of writing to much information on the ppt and boring the audience. Dr. Burmark was right on target,when she mentions how you can lose your audience with all the text provided. Furthermore, the research behind the correct background color was beneficial for implmenting in my revised power point. In order to be unique you have to be creative and go with your own sense for a template. The templates are just a guidline not a necessity. As for the type, I am guilty of going bold happy and using cute text. I was able to delete some of the text and insert some pictures that conveyed the same message.

Crash Course

Creating the powepoint was simple, but the process of uploading and embedding the into slideshare and blog was a new experience. It feel like I am seeing what is behind the scenes of the computer world. I have a better understanding of the process and the steps it takes to perform all the task.
